Key Legislative Contacts
By Dale Fox
It
is a fact that legislators will listen more closely to their constituents,
people they know, and political supporters long before they will
listen to a special interest group. That is why it is so critical
that you become involved in the effort to get our Alaska legislature
to do the right thing for your business, and our Alaska hospitality
industry as a whole.
Former
Congressional Speaker of the House Tip O'Neil said, "All politics
is local"' This is a key point to remember as we attempt to
fight neo-prohibitionist legislation and work toward a pro-business
agenda in Juneau. Laws that the legislature may propose to lower
BAC, shorten bar hours, increase taxes and create senseless regulations
all have an impact on you at home.
Alaska
CHARR watches out for your business every day with full-time staff
and a fantastic professional lobbyist. Our job, as your staff, is
to organize our industry arguments, represent your interests and
mobilize the members when they need to speak out and be heard in
order to defend our (all too often attacked) industry.
Alaska
CHARR wants to be able to mobilize our members quickly, and we will
accomplish this through "Key Legislative Contacts". We
need to know who the Alaska CHARR members are that live in the various
legislator's districts, have given or worked on legislator's campaigns
or have been friends with a legislator for years.
You
are the constituents that legislators will listen and respond to
when hard decisions are being made in Juneau.
We
recently sent a letter asking you to fill out a form letting us
know whom you know, and if you are willing to help. Again in this
newsletter we ask for your help. Trust that we will not ask too
often, but when we do it will be key to the success of our entire
industry to act. Because when we call you, "your legislator"
is in a position to help or hurt our industry. A friendly call from
you may be just what it takes to get them back on the right track.
