Awarding $21,500.00 in scholarships to deserving students
The Alaska CHARR Educational Fund, Inc. (CHARR Ed Fund) was pleased to award 16 scholarships totaling $21,500.00 for the 2008 fall academic semester. The Alaska CHARR Scholarship Fund Program was created to encourage academic achievement and educational opportunities for Alaska students in the hospitality industry, and is supported by proceeds from the Annual Charles H. Selman Golf Tournament and private donations and support.
The funds are used to defray the cost of textbooks and tuition in an accredited university, college or post-secondary vocation school. “We hope to support our Alaskan students and enrich our communities,” says Dale Fox, President of Alaska CHARR. “Our applicants all demonstrate a passion for our Alaska hospitality industry, and a desire to serve or better their community and we are proud to give our support to these wonderful students.”
The following applicants received fall 2008 scholarship awards:

- Clayton Damm – University of Alaska Anchorage
- Emily Oskolkoff – University of Alaska Anchorage
- Anjuli Haydu – University of Alaska Anchorage
- Vanessa Costello – Eastern Maine Community College
- Garrett Benedict – Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, CA
- Deloris Johnson – University of Alaska Fairbanks
- Zeryl Okray – University of Alaska Fairbanks
- Christopher Jordan – University of Alaska Fairbanks
- Christian Brown – Culinary Institute of America at Hyde Park, NY
Last year the Alaska CHARR Educational Fund, Inc. partnered with the Give Something Back Foundation to provide one stand-out applicant with a special four-year scholarship awarding $5,000 annually. The Scholarship Committee is pleased to continue to provide support to:
Shauna Moore, Chugiak – University of Alaska Anchorag
Ms. Moore has demonstrated commitment to excellence in the hospitality industry, is a dedicated Alaskan and has an outstanding academic and service history. Last year Ms. Moore studied at Apicius, the Culinary Institute of Florence, Italy obtaining an occupational certificate in Italian baking and pastry arts, a program offered through the University of Alaska Anchorage. She is continuing her education at the University of Alaska Anchorage, to complete an Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts and a Bachelor of Arts in Hospitality and Restaurant Management.
Alaska CHARR awards scholarships once a year. Applications are available year round and are open to all Alaska residents interested in pursuing a career in Alaska’s hospitality industry. The application deadline for the 2009 fall semester is May 15, 2009. The next round of Alaska CHARR scholarships will be awarded in August 2009.
